The Things That
Haunt Us

When the past follows us into the present, understanding ourselves can be the beginning of something new.

✦

Halloween is the season of ghosts, shadows and things that go bump in the night. But some of the things that stay with us aren't supernatural at all. They are memories, experiences, fears and feelings that we haven't quite found a way to put down.

As the evenings grow darker and the world fills with Halloween imagery, it's a fitting time to reflect on the things that follow us through life, sometimes long after we thought we'd left them behind.

👻 When the past keeps showing up

Have you ever found yourself reacting strongly to something that seems small on the surface? Perhaps a disagreement brings up an old feeling of rejection. Maybe criticism feels particularly painful, or you notice yourself repeating a pattern in relationships despite promising yourself you wouldn't.

Our experiences can shape how we understand ourselves, other people and the world around us. Sometimes, responses that once helped us cope continue long after the circumstances that created them have changed.

This doesn't mean something is wrong with you. Often, there are understandable reasons behind the ways we learn to protect ourselves, connect with others or make sense of difficult experiences.

"What if the things that haunt us aren't signs of weakness, but invitations to understand ourselves a little more deeply?"

🕯️ You don't have to figure everything out alone

Understanding recurring feelings and patterns can take time. It can be difficult to see our own experiences clearly when we're in the middle of them, especially when life is busy or we're used to putting everyone else's needs first.

Counselling offers a space to slow down, explore what's happening beneath the surface and make sense of experiences at your own pace. There is no need to arrive with everything neatly explained, and you don't need to wait until you're at breaking point to seek support.

Sometimes, simply having a space where you can speak openly, without needing to have all the answers, can be a meaningful first step.

🍂 Making peace with what we carry

We cannot always change what has happened to us, but we can explore how those experiences affect us today. With time and support, it may become easier to recognise old patterns, respond to ourselves with greater understanding and make choices that feel more aligned with the life we want to live.

Healing isn't about erasing the past or never feeling difficult emotions again. It's about developing a different relationship with our experiences, so they don't have to define every chapter that follows.

And perhaps that's a comforting thought to take from this spooky season: not every shadow needs to be feared. Some simply need a little light.
