Reality Therapy / Choice Theory

How it works:

Reality therapy, based on William Glasser’s Choice Theory, is a practical and forward-looking approach that focuses on the choices we make and how they affect our wellbeing. It is built on the idea that while we cannot always control what happens to us, we do have control over how we respond. At its heart is the belief that all human behaviour is driven by our attempt to meet five basic needs: love and belonging, power and achievement, freedom, fun, and survival. When these needs are not being met in healthy ways, problems can arise.

In practice:

Therapy involves looking honestly at the choices you are making in your life and exploring whether they are helping or harming you. Instead of dwelling on the past, the focus is on the present and the future, with an emphasis on responsibility and taking steps toward more effective choices. The therapist provides support and encouragement while also helping you reflect on how your current behaviours align with the life you want to create.

Why it helps:

Reality therapy is empowering because it helps people take back control of their lives. By shifting the focus from blame or circumstances to the power of choice, it encourages accountability, problem-solving, and healthier ways of meeting core needs. Over time, this can reduce conflict, improve relationships, and create a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction.

Who it’s for:

This approach can benefit anyone who feels stuck in unhelpful patterns of behaviour, struggling with relationships, or facing challenges in taking responsibility for their life. It is particularly supportive for people who want a practical, no-nonsense style of therapy that focuses on action, personal responsibility, and building a more fulfilling life.
